Converting Your Aeron Chair to a Stool
Applies to: Aeron Chair Stool Conversion Kit (Classic), Aeron Stool Conversion Kit With Base – Remastered, and Aeron Refurbish Chair Parts Combination Kit
This kit swaps your chair's standard gas cylinder for a taller one and adds a footring, turning your Aeron into a stool-height seat — useful for drafting tables, lab benches, or raised workstations. Plan for about 20–30 minutes, and have a second pair of hands nearby for the cylinder removal step.
What you'll need
- Pipe wrench
- WD-40 (or similar penetrating lubricant)
- 4mm Allen/hex key
- A flat, stable work surface
Before you start If your chair has a rear-tilt function, lock it before doing anything else. With the seat upside down, an unlocked tilt mechanism can shift unexpectedly while you're working underneath it.
Steps
- Flip the chair. Set the seat upside down on a flat surface where you have room to work around the base.
- Loosen the old cylinder. The cylinder is friction-fit into the mechanism, not threaded, so it won't unscrew — it has to be worked free. Spray WD-40 where the cylinder meets the mechanism and let it sit overnight if it's stuck. Then grip the shaft with the pipe wrench and twist while pulling it free. Having someone hold the chair steady makes this much easier.
- Insert the new cylinder. Slide the taller replacement cylinder into the mechanism where the old one came out.
- Attach the footring. Slide the footring onto the cylinder and position it at your desired height, then tighten it in place.
- Seat the base. Slide the wide end of the new cylinder into the base's center hole.
- Flip it back over. Set the chair upright and test the height adjustment before sitting.
If the seat height keeps rising on its own: pop off the plastic cap on top of the mechanism and adjust the set screw underneath with a 4mm Allen key.
Safety note: Don't sit in the chair until you've confirmed the rear-tilt lock (if your chair has one) is engaged. An unlocked tilt at stool height is a real fall risk.
